Makau Carabiner
A sleek and innovative carabiner inspired by the form of a Polynesian fish hook—makau in the Hawaiian language. The sharp points of the hook are incorporated as a functional element, integrating a built-in bottle opener within the design. Composed of two interlocking parts—the body and the arm—the carabiner snaps together to create a durable and versatile tool. Renderings explore various material and color options, while a 3D-printed prototype demonstrates its form and functionality.
Development
Initial sketches of a Polynesian fish hook guided the design’s evolution toward a sharper, modern form. Moving into 3D modeling allowed precise refinement of geometry and fit, while prototyping tested scale and usability, ensuring the snap-fit mechanism and bottle opener functioned properly.
